Yawning for Breath Relief?

I had an episode of this a year ago and now it's back. It's like I am constantly having to take a deep breath/yawn in order to feel that I can catch my breath. Most yawns feel like they give me no satisfaction, so I end up having to do like ten yawns in a row to get a deep enough breath. Has anyone else had this? Can it be attributed to anxiety?

I am not connecting yawning to any disease. I was just wondering since this board has many anxiety sufferers, if anyone else has had episodes of having to yawn frequently to take in a satisfying breath.

Do you guys take a deep breath and the yawn jumps in while taking deep breaths? Is that what you mean? Hmmm I never had that but I have been yawning alot since I'm sleep deprived lol. As for anxiety I had it many years ago and didn't know what it was so I called 911 aND firemen and paramedics came. The firemen looked at me and said nothing is wrong with you and they seemed really *beep*... I wasted their time and I felt bad but I freaked out it was my first panick attack what was I to do I thought I was dying.

I just get the feeling like I have to yawn 20 times in a row before I get have one that feels like a deep enough breath. And then the whole process starts all over again.

Yawning has nothing to do with being sleepy or tired, it has to do with not getting enough oxygen. If I were you I would practice some deep breathing (ie diaphragm breathing) exercises. Learn to maximize the amount of oxygen you take in when you take a breath.

Anxiety and poor breathing go together. Like Mario said, you are not getting enough oxygen. Deep breathing exercises coupled with other anxiety control techniques should end the yawns. Of course, anxiety makes for poor quality sleep as well--which can lead to excessive yawning. It's all about the anxiety control around here. :)

This sounds like either anxiety or low oxygen. I saw a chiropracter when I got BFS - almost as a last resort because my docs didn't know how to help. They had done scans of my lungs b/c my GP said I wasn't getting full breaths and my blood ox were low. I was yawning a lot and exhausted. After a few visits to the chiro I could suddenly take deep breaths again. Don't know if it was structural and he fixed it or what. I also do yoga which helps with breathing. Also check allergies - i just wrote about this earlier today, but mine got so much worse when I got BFS - tcouldn't make the darn ball go high enough on their breathing machine to pass the test at the allergist.

Do you exercise/cardio? if you do and have a good diet..it may be a good idea to supplement CoQ10, good for arterial and heart function...better delivery --> better oxygenation if coupled with a good diet and cardio program.

I never knew yawning was due to low oxygen. My babies always yawn when they're sleepy and so do I. I see dogs and cats yawn. I sometimes yawn when I see other ppl yawn. I didn't know I was low on oxygen.

When you're sleepy your body slows down its breathing in preparation for rest. That's where the correlation comes in. But really all yawning is is a sign that you need more oxygen at that particular moment. It's a reflex and it means nothing more sinister or ominous than that.
