Seeking Answers on Internal Shaking Symptoms

Hello All,I know that this is a topic that has been discussed here before but I have yet to find out any info that gives me peace of mind regarding these symptoms. The internal shaking/vibrating/buzzing/fluttering sensation is my most significant symptom. Both of my doctors are at a loss in terms of providing me with any clear cut answer on this. These symptoms started last October (after a variety of goofy ones subsided). They have gotten progressively worse and more widespread. I used to feel it only in my legs but now it's my arms. I notice this when I am lying in bed. Sometimes I will wake up in the middle of the night and I will feel like my whole body is shaking inside. This includes my abdomen, back, neck and even very subtle fluttering feelings on my face now. So basically I feel it everywhere now. These symptoms seem to be worsened if I have had alcohol the night before. How many of you get these sensations? If so, when and where do you feel them? What have your docs said regarding this?Has anyone had them and then had then go away? What can be causing this?Has anyone read where this may be a prelude to something more serious?I have also researched the archives on this site and there were lots of members back in 2004 that discussed this issue quite frequently. However, they no longer participate in this forum. Does anybody know what happens to these people? Why do they just quit coming to the site? Does anyone stay in touch via email with any of the old timers? As always your feedback is greatly appreciated! Thanks,CDC

Hi CDC I would also like to hear more from people about this, as this is one symptom of mine that scares me the most.Mine is more Buzzing/Vibrating rather then shaking, as I would think shaking was more like when you’re shivering from the cold. I don’t see myself shaking I can just feel my insides buzzing and vibrating like I have a million phones virating inside me.Mine started in my feet (both at the same time) and felt like I was standing on a moter then I felt it in my calves too. I now have it in my elbows and bottom and upper thighs front and backs, sometimes I feel my whole body is buzzing.I have had a Brain MRI, which was normal, but I can’t convince myself that this is not something bad! My Neuro said that I was just to focused on my body.Have you had any test etc?Dawn

Dawn,I can't visibly see myself shake nor can it be felt by anyone but me. At times it feels like vibrating and buzzing too. It's just so bizarre and hard to describe. I had a CT-Scan in September of 2007 which was normal. Also had a MRI of the brain & c-spine with contrast which was normal. EMG in Feb 2008 which was clean. Tons of bloodwork, thyroid, lymes etc. which was all normal.I am eager to hear more feedback.CDC

Hi again,I really do hope others chime in on this too. I never had a C-Spine MRI and really want one done. Like you I feel so anxious about this symptom and can't imagine it to just be nothing! I also feel it when lying in bed and it does feel like I'm lying machinery that has a moter. I have seen so many people on Medhelp mention this and a few other forums. Some have no answers. The other day I was standing up and it started down the backs of my legs, and when out drinking with my friends last week I felt my whole body do it again, even my lady bits do it!!Lets hope others share there views on this. :(

Dawn,I have found that if I had a few drinks the night before without a doubt it intensifies my buzzing/vibrating symptoms. One or two beers doesn't bother me. However, if I have more than that or drink any liquor it's a different story. I will usually wake up in the middle of the night and it literally feels like I am plugged into a wall socket. I gave up alcohol for about 4 months but the sensations didn't go away. I, too, read a bunch on med help but all the docs say "not sure what you mean by that" etc.If you search the archives on this site by typing in internal shaking or internal tremors you will find lots of people on here who experience what we do.So frustrating!CDC

Yes, I have the internal vibrating/buzzing as well. Just a few moments ago I felt it in my foot. I've had these sensations coupled with others (fluttering/tickle) all over my body. I mean everywhere. Last night I laid awake in bed unable to sleep due to the sensations. They were horrible! I tried to relax myself as best I could in hopes that they would subside...but with no such luck. These sensations do wax and wane for me; however, I have more bad days in general than good ones. I've had an mri done on my brain and a c-spine and both came back normal. I've had a full neuro exam and bloodwork. Nothing came of either. I'm thankful I have nothing serious but it sucks that no one knows what is going on with me...and therefore is unable to give me appropriate medication for symptoms. I've had these sensations for 9 months now. I've tried xanax, herbal remedies, vitamin supplements, teas, diet changes, exercise and nothing has worked to alleviate the symptoms. The only thing that works is riding in a car. For some reason the symptoms subside almost completely...I'm wondering if this is due to the vibration of the car? Anyone else experience this?

I have the exact same thing. Every time i awaken out of sleep, my body is shaking/vibrating from within...you can't actually see my body shake...it's like a motor inside my arms, chest, head. I've had MRI's of spine, brain, blood tests..you name it...all normal.Do any of you have any known viruses that might be causing this?

CDCyou said you had a variety of other goofy symptoms that started last October....what were some of those other symptoms? WEre you under alot of stress at that time, were you sick at that time...can you remember anything else that might have been going on then that could have triggered this?

Macmaxam,Last summer I began a pretty rigorous jogging routine. By late August I started noticing my legs popping (on the inside)like crazy. I didn't think much of it. It just took a little longer for them to calm down than normal. By mid September I was feeling pins & needles in my right foot and right hand. I thought this was just from additonal running. A week or so after that I began having the following symptoms: increased eye floaters, flushing sensations in my legs, my legs felt weird inside and very warm, the hair on the face and leg sensation, dull headaches, felt tired and sick (like I was getting the flu, but never got it). I'm sure there was other stuff but I don't remember it all. At this point I was convinced I had MS. Anyway, this all went away by late October and that's when the twitching and all the internal buzzing/vibrating set in. My Neurologist's first impression was that I had some sort of virus. CDC

Macmaxam,I also had precieved weakness in my right hand and right leg. The right hand stuff went away. However, the right leg still comes and goes. Now I have the weird weak feeling in my left arm. That's been pretty consistent for about 4 months. Although I have been working out in the gym and getting stronger.CDC

Hey guys: I have had the motor running sensation also. I am not as bad now. But when I was taking a higher dosage of prozac, it was really bad. Are any of you taking any SSRI meds? It is a creepy sensation, but I have come to believe that it is not life threatening.Cindy

HI there, I had the buzzing and vibrating too. Mine started last September when I went hyperthyroid. At first it felt like there was water pulsating in my veins...mostly in my legs. As my thyroid numbers adjusted the buzzing decreased. I still feel it occasionally in my arms or in my left foot, but it is 90% gone. In my case, I believe my thyroid problems cause my body to be depleted of magnesium at a cellular level and this caused the sensations. My twitching and buzzing started simultaneously with going hyperthyroid, so it is the only conclusion I can come up with.Maybe certain viruses cause the electrolyte balance in our bodies to be thrown off and this causes the buzzing? I only wish I knew. It is a very disconcerting symptom.Linda

Hi AllI think it's freaky as a few of us had our symptoms start last year around September/October, it's when mine came to light. I to had a slightly over active thyroid and haven't had it rechecked for months as I keep meaning to but never get around to it. Spend most my time on the net!! I feel mine are bad most days and some days I feel nothing! Last night I was on the Couch and leaning on one side and my whole side started to buzz again.Does anyone feel it when standing? Like a mild electric current going through your arms or down one leg etc? If I stand talking to someone I feel my inner thighs do it! My twitching is not so bad but the other day my work mate saw my arm twitch as it was a big thumper!! They made fun saying i was Alien and I had to just laugh it off, they did say after that they have had a few twitches like that. What other symptoms have you guys had?

Dawn,I've had the internal vibrating/buzzing as well. I'll sometimes put an arm or leg against my husband to see if he can feel it, (so far he says he can't). This symptom concerned me at 1st, but doesn't really bother me now; I've had it on and off for about 20 years. Yes, I've had it standing where my legs and back (maybe entire body) really feel it. My sister, how doesn't have BFS told me about an "internal shaking" she has, and she was wondering if if was from low blood sugar. My mother, also who doesn't have BFS told me that she feels a sensation in areas of her body "like a cat is purring up against her". I think this sensation is quite common in people w/o BFS as well as with those of us who do have it. I've read "hormones" and "fibromyalgia" can also cause this. Anyway, I've had it many many years---it's common with BFS. Best Wishes, Denise

Hi DeniseIt's funny you mention about Hormones as I've always wondered if it could be hormone related, I know there are men on here with symptoms but Fibromyalgia seems to effect more women then men and I always notice that my symptoms are worse when I'm due a period. At the moment I'm going through a massive self testing stage, I keep bending my neck to see if anything happens and the slightest twitch or tingle or buzz will send me in a panick! I also always do the heel to toe walk when just going to the bathroom!! I can't stop this and the more I notice things the more I panick! How you have got through 30 years worrying about all this is amazing, I think that I will be in a loony ward if I have to go 30 more years with all this worry! Your posts are so great as I always feel better when I see what you have experiened and can still tell the tale and remain fully functional 30 years later. Like you I have experienced everything from Vertigo to buzzing, twitching, pins & needles, pain, cramps, jerking, buzzing feet after treadmill and so much more. I have an over active bladder though which I don't think you've mentioned.Thank you for being on this forum! ;)

Dawn,Yes, I've had an overactive bladder from the very beginning. My 1st neuro did a couple of urine cultures (negative), and a few years later, after much complaining on my part, my GP did some type of kidney x-ray. The bladder symptoms have waxed and waned over the years, but haven't really gotten any worse---so don't worry. This is very common among women of all ages and can be attributed to many things, i.e. stress, hormones, fibro, etc.As time goes on you'll worry less---really. I've gone for years not even thinking about BFS. When I get a new symptom I get temporarily freaked sometimes, but nothing like the 1st year or two. Best Wishes, Denise

How many of you get these sensations?I get the buzzing symptoms. If so, when and where do you feel them?Feet, arms, hands. What have your docs said regarding this? The doctors, for the most part, have been clueless. My neurologist, however, who is very good, said that it probably goes hand in hand with the twitching and is a benign post-viral condition. My EMG, after buzzing and twitching, was clean. Has anyone had them and then had then go away?Unlike the twitching, the buzzing comes and gos. What can be causing this?A post-viral symptom, I believe. Diseases like BFS and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome can cause all kinds of weird things to happen. Has anyone read where this may be a prelude to something more serious?I've heard buzzing can be a symptom of diabetes; however, if your glucose levels and you are in good physical condition (other than the BFS) I wouldn't worry about that. I have also researched the archives on this site and there were lots of members back in 2004 that discussed this issue quite frequently. However, they no longer participate in this forum. Does anybody know what happens to these people? Why do they just quit coming to the site? Does anyone stay in touch via email with any of the old timers? Hopefully, God willing, they are healed!

Hi Michael, i've had the buzzing/vibrations in my feet and in my arms. The foot thing was making me crazy for a while. It felt like I had my foot on a vibrating cell phone. This has passed for now, thankfully. It is my opinion that the buzzing is just another form of twtiching...maybe a milder form? I never had the buzzing until my twitches started to decrease. At any rate, try to relax a little because so many of us have them. You are not alone.Linda
