Lack of Willpower Over Holidays

Hi everyone. I am mostly just venting about the lack of any will power over the holidays. This past week, like many of us over the holidays have had a few drinks and an abundance of unhealthy food including a lot of chocolate. Last night I indulged in quite a bit of Hershey's chocolates and was woken up this morning by multiple twitches including a brand new twitch around my knee cap. In one year of this crap, this is the strongest/most frequent twitch I have ever had. Until now my eyelids and rught elbow were the status quo with random one hitters all over the body and face. This knee one is like a powerful machine gone going off in my knee. I wont be able to sleep until when/if it calms down. Its like something is continuously exploding in my knee. My left eyelid which has twitched in some capacity every day for one year is also worse this week. I am also getting a lot more one hitters than usual. Is this some sort of BFS attack? Is this a direct result of the chocolate? I am one of the few on here not scared of neurologic disease......I am just extremely annoyed. The only thing that worries me is that I feel as if one day I am going to wake up and every muscle in my body will be twitching 24/7. I am hoping this attack or whatever is going on settles. I dont know if the chocolate/unhealthy eating has caused this but I can promise I will not be eating anymore chocolate for a very long time. Thanks in advance for listeningJim

Happy holidays Jim! I could've written this post. I was pretty much hotspot twitch free for several weeks, and then Christmas parties, alcohol, Christmas Eve, gluten, Christmas Day, more gluten and chocolates and alcohol and knee twitch and electric type feelings and...aaaahhhh! Lol. I had the same twitch around my left kneecap, and it was ridiculously annoying, as I'm sure you well know. The good news is, after cleaning up my diet and increasing my intake of probiotics, it stopped yesterday :D) Stress definitely played a big huge part, and although I love Christmas and celebrating Jesus' birthday, I'm sure glad the hustle and bustle of the season are over! Also, I'm one of the BFSers who benefitted from diet modification. However, it was nearly impossible to avoid gluten since it's in so many things and it's everywhere. For instance, my mother in law had some gingerbread cookies that she swore were gluten free so I gladly had more than a few. I asked to look at the box and it was not gluten free  but rather the box, which she didn't read closely said "also available in gluten free." Twitching on the knee ensued for about 3-4 days!So yes, food most definitely plays a part, so if you haven't already, start a symptom journal and include any food triggers so that you can see what does it for you. Might be the chocolate, might be the gluten.

Thanks emmie! Happy Holidays to you as well! The biggest mistake I made is for one month before the holidays I was gluten free and then slipped big time over the holidays. Although I still twitched while gluten free, I didnt have any attacks like this! Because this knee is driving me bonkers, I will be back to gluten free starting today and see what happens. I believe diet may play a role in my case of twitching as well. I had a food intolerance test a few months back and to give you an idea of some of the results....Severe to egg whites, moderate to gluten, moderate to bakers yeast among many others. I think I ate all three in abundance this week as to previously I was avoiding them! Not a coincidence I am twitching like blinking Christmas lights. Thank you for your response!Jim

Don't be surprised if it takes a few days or longer for the twitching to subside even after you clean up your diet. I actually tried my best to avoid trigger foods, but even with best efforts it's hard to avoid unless you prepare it yourself. I too had an increase in random little twitches all over, and those I don't mind; I've had them in varying degrees for years and years, and I'm still here with a clean clinicals and EMG, but it's the hotspots that really suck. And that knee one, (actually it was like right above the knee but went off pretty hard and rapid) sure is one of the most distracting!Good luck, and take care!

twitchydds,You should actually be grateful for an event like this that has caused you to realize a correlation between an activity you partook in and a ramp up in symptoms. If you keep a food journal you should notice even more correlating trigger foods. I also have some excellent news for you. There is a reason we develop food intolerance issues later in life and they need not be permanent with the proper treatment. There is an ever growing body of knowledge accumulating regarding a condition known as 'leaky gut syndrome'. Unfortunately it is still little recognized by mainstream medicine but it is slowly making its way into their awareness, probably because it is just too big to be ignored. Imagine my surprise when I googled the symptoms of leaky gut syndrome and found an exact match to everything I was experiencing under the label of BFS. I sought out a holistic doctor who had experience treating leaky gut syndrome and who had successfully helped others. Imagine my further surprise (and delight) when I responded positively to their recommended supplements and temporary dietary restrictions. Within a few short months I was able to start working foods I was once intolerant to back into my diet, including gluten. I had to suspend some preconceived notions and open my mind to some techniques that I did not understand nor believe were possible at first. They had gradually earned my trust though so I continue to humor each step as it came. There are allergy elimination techniques that are based on acupuncture. There is an order that must be followed though. Our bodies develop new intolerance or allergy responses for a reason. That inflammation and damage must be healed first. I don't take the information I am posting lightly. I understand how absurd it sounds to people that have been conditioned to believe what is and is not possible through conventional medicine and a multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical run industry. I don't much care for conspiracy theories but it is hard to ignore what I know to be possible and contrast it with what our trusted doctors are taught in medical school. I have no agenda other than to help spread the knowledge that I have gained through my experience in overcoming BFS 100%. As more people discover what I discovered it is my hope that awareness will continue to increase to the point where every new member on this forum will be informed of a very likely solution to their problems. Too many people respond positively to diet changes for this to just be an anomaly. I don't believe i was an isolated case, other than the fact that I humored possibilities that others may refuse to even entertain. If more people experience success I hope to see that trend change though. It is already slowly happening as EmmyCee is here touting her success experienced through diet modification. Anyway, hopefully you listen to your body and at least investigate leaky gut syndrome. Don't be surprised if your GP has never heard of it. I had to go alternative and I have no regrets that I did. My preconceived notions are no more. Good luck to you and let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you Secret Agent Man,I have actually read your posts and I do agree and believe everything you said. Besides....you are a fellow Ohioan. ...we have to stick together :) I am currently under the care of a chiropractor who has also helped my special needs daughter tremendously through diet. It is through he I got blood work to test for food intolerances. I also suffer from acid reflux and intestinal inflammation (go figure....has to be a connection with twitching). I diet calls for eliminating severe intolerance for at least 6 months, moderate (gluten for me) for at least 3 months, and mild intolerances sparingly throughout the week. He also has plans to put me on digestive enzymes and probiotics. Ith did good for one month and then fell off the wagon for the holidays. I know I have to stay strong for at least 6 months to give this a chance. What's the worst case scenario....I eat healthier?! As I begin my journey, I. may have questions for you. Thanks for your concern and help!Jim

Glad to hear you are well on your way. I know you said you have a doctor you are working with, but if you are anywhere near the Dayton area and would like a second opinion from the doc I owe most of my recovery to just let me know. PM anytime and good luck.

I had BFS for about 6 months before I finally resigned to try alternative medicine and diet was suggested. I was very reluctant at first for multiple reasons but gave it a shot. The positive results I experienced continually boosted my confidence levels in the docs and their methods I was so skeptical of at first. How severe is subjective. For me it was pure hell and I'd rate them at a 10 on a 10 scale. Body wide constant twitching, night jerks, numbness, tinggling, brain fog, anxiety, fear, and so much more.

Thank you again. I am from the Youngstown, OH area.....so will only be looking into your doc if I cant kick it with mine here.b Thanks againJim
