Finger Twitching and Its Causes

Mark, When I went to my first neuro and I asked him what causes my fingers to move or twitch he said when you get twitching in your forearm. Now sometimes I get twitching and rapid firing in my forearms then traveling to my fingers making them bend, twitch, moveside to side. Sometimes I get them in my fingers only, espeicaly when I grab something and let go they will twitch. I never had my finger twitch and not move. I've had a really bad flare up with my hands lately right after I thought I've could sign off. I've had every kind of twitch lately all over but espeically in the hand muscles and forearms, fingers like crazy. I'm going to a top neuro in philly in a few weeks and I'm going to asked these kinds of questions. I'll keep you posted. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply - you and I seem a lot alike in terms of finger twitching. I get this a lot at night too, before I'm falling asleep. My hands tremor a lot and I worry about Parkinson's - perhaps a drug-induced Parkinsonism caused by SSRI's.

Please do keep me posted.

Mine too - my worst period lasted for over 6 months, and got really scary. Then subsided and went away as sure as it came. That said, I periodically get the occasional finger twitch still even now. Never fully leaves.

I've found a calcium/magnesium supplement seems to ease the forearm/finger/toes thing, and I wonder if it is because we have some periodic tetany-like thing going on. My GP actually recommended I try it, and though I was skeptical, I have to give him credit. Improves (though doesn't necessarily eliminate) the symptoms.

Also, realize that when your fingers are dancing like this, it is often actually your forearm muscles that are twitching, and the fingers move as a result. The exception would be the muscle in the pad between the index finger and thumb, and the outer muscle under the pinky and above the wrist. THESE MUSCLES ARE NOTORIOUS TWTICHERS, EVEN IN THE GENERAL POPULOUS. I distinctly remember occasions before I knew of **S where I would get this, it would annoy me, but then it would go away in hours or days and I wouldn't think again about it. I believe many get these, and none are dropping dead or disabled as a result.

BFS - in this case, the S stands for "sucks".

I really have to thank you for all the replies to this topic because this whole hand/finger thing has me terrified. My hands tremble all day long and my fingers have been acting up for about 5 months. My fingers don't dance all the time, but they do act up daily and even at night when I am just falling asleep and in the AM as I am in that half sleep/waking state.

My fingers don't jump like piano playing or typing - they really just kind of "twitch" (like a quick bounce or flick and then that's it - it's not a repetitive motion when it happens) but it is reassuring to know, 17Wildcat17, that in case I get to the point you were at that I'm not alone.

I worry so much about drug-induced Parkinsonism (I've been on SSRI's for many years) and also Tardive Dyskenisia and Dystonia but so many of my other symptoms just don't seem to add up to these diseases. I know for a fact that BFS is present in my body - there's no doubt about it - I've had the "classic" BFS symptom where BFS will move the finger to one side, hold it there for a quick second, then release it back to normal. That's happened a few times (the first time, I jumped out of my seat thinking "Oh My God - what was that" - terrified). But there's always that other fear factor of something else present in my body.

furballfury - I don't seem to get finger twitching that originates from a fasic in my forearm. Once in a while I do but like Golfputter says above, most of the time, I get them in my fingers only. My forearms have been really shaky lately so I wonder if this isn't causing part of it.

Thanks again for all the input - any more feedback would be greatly appreciated as I am really worried about all this.

God Bless, Mark

I may have been exagerating a tad, they were not literally like playing a piano, but I think you know the point I was making. They were dancing like crazy and I could definitely feel the twitches in my forearms while this was happening.
