Fasciculation and EMG Results

Hi all!I have been constant fasciculation in both of calf for a month and also have fasciculations (not constant) in my arms, shanks, shoulders, neck. In the begining of this i had tingling in both of calfs and in my foots, but some days after the numbness disappeared.I went to neurology and did EMG. There are some fibrillation potentials and fasciculation potentials in my legs, but everything else is OK.According to my Doc: Motoneuron disease isn't testable. But I have some mild nerve damage in calfs and shanks. Benign fasciculation maybe. Observation suggested.I will have to controll EMG in a half year. What do you think about it? Might it be ALS or BFS or anything other? I am 26 years old male.

Hmm well with mild nerve damage (fibrillations on your EMG) it cant be pure BFS, but this is (especially with tingling etc) typicall for neuropathies or disc troubles.

Yes, signs of denervation must not be present when diagnosis of BFS is made. Fibrillation is twitching of single muscle fiber that occur only with diseases. That doesnt mean you cant have benign condition without name (there is member AlienHost whose EMG was not good too and he is still doing well :)But with your sensory issues and "nerve damage" its very likely some kind of neuropathy or disc problems - tingling is very typicall. For disc problems there should be pain.Your age, lack of reinnervation signs of EMG and distribution of twitching is all on your side.

The intresting is that, i have no other symptoms. No weakness, no pain, no atrophy, i just feel fasciculations everywhere in my body. Continously in calfs and less often other parts of my body. And the symptoms were suddenly appeared when i woke up. I fear!!!! Might it be ALS?

Nobody could tell you here if its neuropathy, ALS, multifocal motoric neuropathy, disc problems, spinal cord infections...But the most likely it could be really neuropathy, since tingling is not associated with ALS but its very typical for mentioned neurpathies. The fibrilations potentials would fit it..I would recommend you to seek second oppinion, because as you can read in literature or everywhere from doctors answers, BFS is diagnosed only when EMG is clean (except fasciculations).Neuropathies are well treatable. What was your NVC? The first part of EMG.

NCV was ok. Speed and intensity of electrical signals traveling along the nerves is ok. Normal F-wave latencies and amplitudoes. Polyneuropathy exclude. No one was able to say what causes it. Every docs (2 neuro docs) just said, we have to wait. It's drive me crazy!

Shanyeeka,I don't know if you've read my posts but I relate so much to having proof of something being wrong but not knowing what it is. My doc is saying I have some type of peripheral neuropathy and he does not think ALS but he really does not know what I have. I have twitching everywhere (controlled somewhat with Klonopin). It can on suddenly. Three clean EMGs (no fibs, no fasciculations etc, nothing). Muscle biopsy showing denervation and reinervation. NCV tests (two normal followed by third that was severaly abnormal in all sensory nerves). I also have no weakness except for a few second thing yesterday with my arm after I woke up. I'm hoping I just slept on it and it lost circulation for a few seconds. I would get to the most expert neuromuscular specialist I could find who has a history of successfully treating some people with your symptoms. Jro

hi shanyeeka,i am having the same symptoms as yours as it is, for now i dont think i found a cure, i have been facing this annoying fasciculations for months now. :( what a bummer, and im also the same age is u.

Savanturn and Shanyeeka - This is from a post I did a while back"About the denervation - the last clinical neurological specialist I saw (both my neuro and the rheumatoid specialist wanted me to see this guy believing him the best in the SE in diagnosing neuro-muscular disorders) said that everybody has denervation from about 7 years old on and this in itself will tell the clinician nothing. If it was pervasive and non-healing then that signifies a problem which could only be diagnosed with other evidence."So this guy would disagree about not seeing denervation among bfs sufferers - he's been in the business a long time has people referred to him from all over the east coast of the US. I tend to believe him. Shanyeeka - if you've been to a neuro and they said no als then you do not have it. This is one disease they can spot easily and would not get a license to practice if they couldn't. Plus it doesn't happen all over like that and is followed by weakness. Not like your symptoms. You can search within the forum for the answers to most of your questions and this may help you at times. It stinks to have this stuff but it's not fatal and it does get better.

Gday ShannyeekaYour symptoms sound exactly same as mine so I am thinking it may be Isaac Syndrome or NeuromytoniaI had the run around before I was diagnosed .Had 3 EMGs and a lot of stress before It was found. If you want to send me a Private Message with you email I can send you a linkto a typical EMG with an Isaacs/Neuromytonia result.RickSydney Australia
